Students "freaking out" after two incidents at UNBSJ campus

The editor of UNB Saint John's student newspaper says international students are "freaking out" following two violent on-campus incidents over the weekend.

David Shipley, editor of The Baron, said Sunday he now fears both incidents had radical overtones.

He said race wasn't considered a motivating factor in a fight and brawl that occurred at a Student until a Pakistan-born student was verbally and physically assaulted by four unkown white males on Sunday.

"My new editor, Ran Malik, just got beat up outside the bookstore in broad dayight," he said.

"We covered the Friday night story and felt that was the end of it. But this is Sunday afternoon and a lot of our international students freaking out."

Mr.Malik, a 22-year-old third year business student who didn't even attend the toga party, said he was walking out of the Ward Chipman Library around 10:30 a.m. Sunday when four white males memerged from behind cars.

"They came in front of me and they just surrounded me," he said:" I thought I was about to be robbed. Then, they start abusing me with racial comments and stuff"

"You(expletive) middle Eastern brown person, go back home," Mr.Malik recalls someone saying

After that, he said two the white men "got hold of me and I put my hands over my face. The guy who in front of me hit me a couple of blows, one on my back and one behind my neck."

As Mr.Malik strived to free himself, he said he got elb, elbowed in the nose, causing it bleed.

Otherwise, he said, he escaped without physical harm.

"I ran as fast as I could and went into the residence and called security," he said. "They didn't see anyone around."

Still he was totally shaken by the experience.

"I have been here two years now and they're hasn't been a (racial) remark or anything, and this is an actual mugging," he said. "I actually feared stepping outsiade my room."

City police, in confirming they have the incident under investigation, said Mr.Malik tole them he doesn't believe his assailants were memeber of the UNBSJ student body.

"I only saw one guy who hit me, so there isn't much the police con dao right now," he said later.

Mr.Shipley said toga party brawl started when an "this white guy, we don't know if he was a student ot not" cut in on an international student who was dancing with his domestic girlfriend.

After cutting in, he said the white male "gave buddy the finger."

The provked the international student to get physical, promoting a brawl between whites and supporters of the international students.
