Playing DTS audio files with iTunes

iTunes can play DTS (Digital Theater Systems) encoded audio files through the optical audio out port on a PowerMac G5 or an AirPort Express Base Station connected to an amplifier (or powered speaker set) with a DTS decoder.

DTS decoding can only work if the digital DTS stream passes through iTunes completely unmodified. Otherwise, you will just hear static from your speakers. To make sure the sound is unmodified, follow the four steps below to make the appropriate settings.

[b]Step 1:[/b] Drag the volume slider in iTunes to maximum.

[b]Step 2:[/b] Set the volume adjustment of the audio file (in the Options section of the info for the file) to None.

To access this setting:

[*]Click once to select a song.
[*]Choose [b]Get Info[/b] from the [b]File[/b] menu.
[*]Click the Options tab if necessary.

[b]Step 3:[/b] Turn off these preferences:

[*]Sound Enhancer
[*]Crossfade playback
[*]Sound Check
[/list]
To access these preferences, choose [b]Preferences[/b] from the [b]iTunes[/b] menu ([b]Edit[/b] menu in Windows) and click the Audio button. Then deselect each of the items listed above.

[b]Step 4:[/b] Turn off the Equalizer.
