China calls for cooler heads as anti-Japan protests near


BEIJING - China has moved to contain anti-Japan rage ahead of planned large-scale protests this weekend.


China's anti-Japanese websites and internet forums are continuing to call for a second wave of rallies following violent protests by tens of thousands last weekend.

Demonstrations are planned in cities across the country including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Tianjin and Wuhan, with some to be held Saturday and others Sunday.

In an indication the government is beginning to fear anti-Japan fury may get out of hand, police in Beijing and Shanghai have issued notices urging people not to participate in protests that are not approved.

Some anti-Japanese web pages that had announced details of this weekend's protests have also been shut down.

The protests, if they go ahead, will coincide with the scheduled arrival on Sunday of Japan's Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura.

Japanese diplomatic missions in China have issued an urgent alert to Japanese nationals, while the U.S. Embassy has cautioned its citizens, saying protests could spill over into anger against foreigners in general.

Tens of thousands of Chinese last weekend demonstrated in three cities against Tokyo's approval of a history textbook that China says glosses over Japan's wartime record.

Tensions worsened on Wednesday, when Japan announced it would let its companies drill for oil and gas in fields contested with China in the East China Sea, a move China has called "a provocation."
