WARNING! These images display the harsh reality of driving and the dangers it exposes us to everyday. Traveling in cloudy, almost fogy weather @11pm June 6, 2005, along the same highway(I89N through NH) I have lived off of for 22 years, a female moose decided to crawl up out of the median and pause in our lane. Upon impact I was knocked unconscious and thrown onto my girlfriends lap, cruise control was set on 72ishMPH and never disengaged, as I never saw the moose and applied the brake. The pictures can describe the physics of the impact with a 900lb+ animal but one of the most important factors of our survival is the fact that the A-pillars have structural reinforcement that stretches across the roof and down into the B-pillars as well as other areas of the vehicle(amazing safety feature). We traveled off the highway, up and down an embankment, never rolled, back on the highway north bound, dropped into the median, launched out of the median onto the southbound lanes, and darted into the woods where two birch trees stoped the car and fell to the ground. I was unconscious through the whole incident, yet my girlfriend had endured every horrifying sight, sound, smell, and feeling. I was lucky enough to be with such a brave person who was strong enough to realize it was me on her lap, wake me from a dangerous state, and help me to the edge of the highway where we flagged half a dozen or more vehicles until an ambulance happened to be on route and spot the accident and two bloody individuals on the side of the highway. There are many ways to look at what happened, when something as severe as this occurs. If anything were to happen differently, we may not have been lucky enough to walk away with our lives. I still love to drive and practice safe driving habits in my 2nd WRX, yet there is truly no way to be completely secured. In conclusion we’re thankful to have left this with each other and the privilege to continue living.
