A guide to help you save time and frustration!

Developed in the early 80’s, the Floyd Rose bridge design allows guitarists who want to use their tremolo bar (aka the “whammy bar”) but have their guitar remain in tune. Older designs like the original Fender Stratocaster bridge simply don’t stay in tune well when the tremolo bar is used, especially when it’s used for “dive bombs”- extreme slackening of the strings.
Our guide is designed to help the novice and experienced guitarist alike in restringing the typical Floyd Rose design as found on many of today’s popular guitars such as those by Ibanez, Jackson, Squier, and others. Restringing a Floyd Rose can be a time consuming and sometimes frustrating process. These simple tips will help you change strings faster and with fewer hassles! Please note that a quality electronic guitar tuner is essential for this task.
Before doing anything else, with your guitar in tune, look at the bridge from the side. Is it floating parallel to the face of the guitar like the one pictured below?

If so, you are ready to proceed. If not, skip to the section of this guide on setting spring tension then come back.
Note that if you are not comfortable making these adjustments to your guitar we recommend taking it to a qualified guitar repairperson.
The next step is to find something to block the bridge so that it doesn’t move while changing the strings. A 9 volt battery wrapped in electrical tape or one of those pink pencil erasers works well. The object you use should tilt the bridge forward very slightly- just enough to keep the object in place.
Once you’ve found an object to block the strings with we begin the process of replacing the strings. This should be done one string at a time. First, unlock the locking nut for each pair of strings. Set the fine tuner for each string in the middle of its range of adjustment.
Detune the high ‘E’ string using the tuning machine on the headstock. Once the string is detuned, unlock it from the bridge saddle by loosening the corresponding screw at the back of the saddle. Remove the string from the guitar.
Next, clip the ball end off the new string with a pair of string cutter or wire cutters and lock it into the bridge saddle. Be sure to tighten the screw at the back of the saddle so that it’s snug but you do not need to over tighten.
Now, tune the string using the tuning machine on the headstock. The next step is VERY IMPORTANT. You must stretch out the string very well by holding it down at the 5th fret, tugging firmly on it above the 12th fret and then retuning until you reach a point where tugging on the string doesn’t make the string go flat. Once the string has been stretched out, make sure it is in tune and then repeat the whole process for the each string one at a time. Detuning, removing, replacing and stretching each string in turn.
Once all the strings have been replaced, remove the object blocking the bridge. You’ll notice that all of your strings are now slightly sharp. Starting with the high ‘E’ and working your way up to the low ‘E’, tune each string using the tuning machine on the headstock. Repeat, starting with the high ‘E’ each time until all the strings are in tune and the bridge is once again floating parallel to the face of the guitar as pictured above.
Finally, lock the locking nut (it should be snug but don’t over tighten). Fine tune the guitar using the fine tuners on the bridge. Plug in, turn up your amp and play!
SETTING SPRING TENSION
Trying to tune your Floyd Rose equipped guitar and having your bridge tilt forward or back? This is a sign that your tremolo springs are not correctly adjusted to counterbalance the tension of the strings. This could be due to changing your string gauge and not adjusting the trem springs to compensate or using non standard tunings (drop ‘D’ or tuning down).
Adjusting the tremolo springs so that the tremolo floats parallel to the top of the guitar (see diagram on other side) is fairly straight forward. If the bridge is tilting forward towards the neck of the guitar, there is not enough tension and the springs need to be tightened or in some cases an extra spring added. If the bridge is tilting back the spring tension is to great and needs to be loosed or a spring removed.
Generally, players using .008-.010 strings should use 3 (or sometimes 2) springs, players using heavier strings may need to use an additional spring.
If your tremolo is leaning forward, unlock the locknut nut and loosen your strings using the tuners on the headstock. Next, tighten the two screws which hold the spring claw into the body.

A small adjustment may be all that is necessary, begin with a half turn on each screw using a Philips screwdriver. After adjusting the claw, retune the guitar (using an electronic tuner) and check the bridge. If it is still leaning forward you will need to repeat the steps again.
If the screws are all the way into the body and the bridge is still tilting forward you will need to add an extra spring. Some guitars come with a spare spring, if not you can purchase one at your local Musicstop, they are very inexpensive.
If the bridge is tilting back you will need to loosen the screws, begin with a small adjustment- a quarter or a half turn. Repeat as necessary. It may also be necessary to remove one of the springs in order to lessen the tension. Once you can tune the strings to the desired pitch and the bridge will float level you’re done!
