加拿大北电公司2月7号宣布未来两年内将裁员2900人

本报多伦多2月10日电 加拿大北电网络公司宣布，公司将在未来两年内裁员2900人，这是继公司全球雇员数从2001年的高峰数9.5万人降至2006的3.4万人后的又一次大裁员，本次裁员重点主要是公司的行政人员和研发人员。此外，公司还计划将1000个工作岗位转移至人工花费较低的国家，包括中国、印度以及墨西哥。

　　一年多前，北电网络任命美国人扎菲罗夫斯基为公司总裁。当时，该公司正处于经营困境。扎菲罗夫斯基临危受命，负责对公司进行重建，他将公司的主要业务集中到下一代无线通讯传输、通讯服务商专用设备以及商业客户使用的通讯技术3大市场方向。即便如此，该公司在国际市场上仍然面临思科、爱立信以及阿尔卡特—朗讯等公司的激烈竞争。

　　去年年底，北电公司宣布将研发开支从收入的17%%降至14%%—15%%，将行政开支从目前的11%%降低到5%%—6%%。此次裁员与开支计划的调整密切相关。

　　扎菲罗夫斯基认为，公司的“瘦身”计划不会伤及公司的筋骨，为了公司的长远利益，裁员是一个不得已但正确的决定。该公司还计划减少位于世界各地的15万平方米的房地资产，加上裁员和岗位转移，预计每年可以为公司节省4亿美元的开支。

Nortel Announces Another Round Of Layoffs

Nortel once employed 95,000 during the heyday of the technology bubble; the company's headcount currently numbers about 34,000.

Nortel Networks continued its drastic downsizing Wednesday as it announced that it will layoff another 2,900 employees and shift 1,000 more to new overseas locations.

President and CEO Mike Zafirovski announced the latest in an ongoing series of layoffs and said they're part of Nortel's "business transformation plan." The plan is designed to return the Canadian-based firm to its former profitability and leadership role in the telecom and networking industry. Nortel once employed 95,000 during the heyday of the technology bubble that imploded in 2000. The firm's headcount currently numbers about 34,000.

"These are tough but necessary measures, and we recognize the impact they will have on affected employees," said Zafirovski in a statement. "However, as we roll out the various initiatives over the next two years, every effort will be made to leverage normal attrition and redeploy affected employees to other areas of the company."

Nortel's stock rose 4% in early trading Wednesday, an indication that investors approved of the announcement. The company said the cuts would eventually bring about annual savings of $400 million.

Nortel's new business model calls for it to reduce general and administrative expenses significantly while improving processes and operations. But Zafirovski has said R&D investment will continue to be a top priority, although its expenditures will be reduced slightly.

"Funding will shift and increase significantly Nortel's investment in high-growth opportunities," the company said.

Nortel said 70% of the 2,900 job cuts will take place this year, while most of the positions that will be shifted to lower-cost operations will take place next year. Previously, the company said it was beefing up operations in Mexico and Turkey.
