Saint John and Fredericton are suffering outbreak of mumps, with 13 confirmed cases and five possible cases, public health officials said Tuesday.

Saint John Medical Officer of Health Dr. Scott Giffin said eight of the 13 New Brunswickers with mumps, who range in age from 19 to 32, could prove they were vaccinated.

"These outbreaks are occurring and we're not sure whether it's due to waning immunity in people who were immunized as a child or whether there's another cause of that," Giffin said.

"There's no vaccine that's 100 per cent [effective]. When you get immunized with a vaccine against mumps, then you probably have somewhere in the neighbourhood of a 70 per cent protection."

Meanwhile, eight new cases of mumps were confirmed in the Halifax area last week, bringing that city's total number of current cases to 32. It was the third outbreak of mumps to hit Nova Scotia in two years.

The mumps virus can be spread by coughing and sneezing as well as sharing food, drinks and cigarettes. Symptoms include fever, swollen and tender glands and headache.
