The University of New Brunswick is not enhancing security on its Saint John campus, despite a number of assaults on students over the summer.

In August, police arrested three young men in connection to racist graffiti and assaults on Chinese students living in the Millidgeville area, near the school.

Two of the men pleaded guilty to charges connected to those incidents.

University spokesman Dan Tanaka, says one-fifth of students at UNBSJ are Chinese, and he points out that there've been no racially motivated attacks on campus.

"Fortunately so far, security issues have been very rare on this campus but when they do occur the majority of our security issues have really been property related, not personally related," Tanaka said. "Really, it's been incidents mostly of theft, vandalism, and that sort of thing."

Tanaka says in past years, the university has paid for extra security following break-ins.

Campus security is handled by a private company, which monitors the campus around the clock.
