A Message from President John McLaughlin: Commission on Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick

Re: Commission on Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick

UNB has always intended to refrain from comments about the Commission on Post- Secondary Education in New Brunswick until the public release of its final report recommendations. Unfortunately, a leak of partial and potential recommendations has taken place in select media and I feel compelled to respond based on the information as released. I would add the comments attributed to Commissioner L'Ecuyer in L’Acadie Nouvelle appear to reflect draft recommendations only. The final recommendations to be published later this month must still be reviewed by the provincial government and other stakeholders before any binding decisions about the future of post-secondary education in our province are made.

Our position has been clear to the Commission through our two submission we made earlier this year. Both are publicly available at

Here are a few of the key points from those documents:

[COLOR="Red"]1. UNB firmly believes in its two pillars of university education, located in Fredericton and Saint John. This relationship is fundamental to my vision for UNB and its role as the province's national university. I did not become President of this university to see this vision destroyed.
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]2. Our activities on campuses in Bathurst and Moncton must also be recognized for the significant impact they have in those communities and towards our broader provincial and national mission. [/COLOR]3. We do not endorse a merger of UNB Saint John with NBCC Saint John.
4. We do accept the concept of co-location which should not be confused with a merger. A close proximity to the province's largest teaching hospital in Saint John and to the College's health programs, for example, will help to provide a critical mass of students to justify better student services and some shared facilities. Co-location means separate institutions, separate faculty, separate curricula and separate governance. But it also means new opportunities to build academic and institutional partnerships of mutual benefit.
5. UNB's presence in Fredericton and Saint John as well as our many activities throughout the province make us a key player in New Brunswick's self-sufficiency and immigration agendas. UNB generates 80 percent of the province's university research and we educate more than 50 per cent of the province's university students. We must and will be deeply engaged over the next several months in shaping the new post secondary agenda for our province. [/COLOR]

Since the leaked recommendations have been published, we have made contact with all levels of government, student organizations, bargaining units and others to keep them informed of our positions and our intentions. I will be participating in several media interviews over the coming days and when the final recommendations are released later this month, we will be asking for your support to ensure UNB in Fredericton and Saint John remain an integral part of New Brunswick's future. 问题是，如果这样，是不是还会给我们UNB的毕业证？？？如果到最后还是给个别的乱七八糟的毕业证，那还是白搭~~不知道学校什么意思

[SIZE="3"][B]省长本年2月份钦定的高等教育调查委员会在4月20号的报告会上，建议将现有UNBSJ大学（University），与NBCC大专合并(College)，生成一个新的理工科学院（Insititue）。

真的不是在开玩笑！星期五此高教委出结果。

UNBSJ的学生和教职员工是不是要罢课罢工了？

SJ“森穷”真的是穷到了要买卖自己的精神源泉，文化根底？

这个重大的决定直接影响到正在已经毕业的，正在上学的，和还想继续深造的所有同学。
UNB给的文凭就此会大打折扣。整个SJ的国际发展计划可以泡汤了。

这种省力大学摇身破产的事情，在加拿大国土之上这个成了史无前例，NB省就是NB了。
