A report released Friday morning in Fredericton recommends blending universities and community colleges in parts of New Brunswick to form polytechnic institutions.

It's a move students and staff at the University of New Brunswick Saint John have feared and bitterly oppose.

'I see that our programs, if [a merger] would occur, would be diminished .'

—Eric Savoie, University of New Brunswick Saint John student unionEric Savoy, the UNB Saint John student union's external vice president, said they're concerned a merger would short-change students on the kind of schooling they deserve.

"I see that our programs, if that were to occur, would be diminished," Savoie said. "It would be more specific and focused, and we wouldn't have that broad range of educational opportunity."

The university students have said they don't want to sacrifice the liberal arts, but the authors of Friday's report argued polytechnic institutes combine applied skills training with broad subject matter, giving students the best of both worlds — career-ready skills as well as a degree.

Executive Director of Polytechnics Canada Sharon Maloney said it's wrong to think that polytechnic schools offer an "inferior" education.

"We've got an attitude sometimes in this country that sees university education as the pinnacle of education, and sees college education and/or a polytechnic education as inferior," she said. "We really are not being responsive to what the market place is demanding."

Saint John mayor disagrees with report
The merged schools would offer certificates, diplomas, undergraduate degrees, and some graduate degrees. There would also be apprenticeship training and first- and second-year arts and science programs for transfer into other institutions.

Saint John Mayor Norm McFarlane said that while he supported the idea of the two schools working more closely together, lumping them together to form one institution would not be a step in the right direction.

"I do not know what the report says, but personally, I do not agree with them being one," he said, adding he's received 98 e-mails so far from concerned students, faculty and citizens who do not want a merger to happen.

University leaders in Fredericton and Saint John have assured students they'll do whatever is in their power to protect UNBSJ.

Enrolment at the New Brunswick Community College in Saint John has been steadily increasing while enrolment at UNBSJ has been in decline.

While we support some of the broad themes contained in the report, there are several recommendations with which we take exception, particularly those pertaining to our Saint John campus.

UNB will resist any assumption or recommendation that suggests there is no place for UNB in Saint John.

The report is now in the hands of the government and we will be in contact with government representatives over the coming days and weeks to communicate with them about its contents. We also look forward to being part of a larger discussion with New Brunswickers about what kind of post-secondary system works best for this province.

Our view has not changed. We believe in a transformational and dynamic post-secondary system that finds strength through cooperation and value in recognizing colleges and universities as key components of community building.

So what does this mean for UNB now? It means many conversations with government and interest groups about the value of post-secondary institutions. It means continuing to develop complementary relationships with post-secondary institutions throughout the province and elsewhere. It means continuing to conduct the research so vital to our communities and economy. It means educating the next generation of leaders.

We will continue to lead in Fredericton and Saint John and to bring the UNB story into homes across the province and beyond.

I would also like to take this time to thank everyone at UNB including faculty, staff and particularly students for their passionate belief in our university.

Regular updates will follow this communication as we fully digest the contents of the Commission's report and begin to consult with members of the UNB community.

Description: The UNB Student Union is calling on all faculty and students to join them in a demonstration in Saint John on Monday, September 17, 2007. The Union will be providing bus transportation from the SUB at 11:00 am to arrive at Kings Square in Saint John for the rally at 1:00 to take a unified stance against recommendations made by the Commission on Post-Secondary Education.

The Commission, released today in a press conference in Fredericton, recommends that UNB remove its ties with Saint John, and allowing that campus to become a Polytechnic Institute.

“If this happens, Fredericton will be hit hard by the aftermath” states Jordan Graham of UNB Students Union. “ Saint John gives UNB as a whole, the fulfillment of the critical mass required to be a National Comprehensive Institute. With that comes the loss of competitiveness with schools like University of Toronto and UBC. Our great researchers will not want to stay, and we will not attract new professors. Also, we will not be as appealing to great students coming from across Canada.” Graham states that this is an “emergency that needs to be addressed. UNB has to have it’s voice felt on the issue” and encourages all students to attend if possible.

Students will return to Fredericton Student Union Building by 5:00.

We plan to gather in King's Square beginning at noon on Monday, September 17th and beginning to proceed down to King's Street at 1pm. I would like to remind everyone that it is crucial that everyone participates and brings everyone they know. This is to show UNB Solidarity. The march will involve the Saint John Police and I would remind everyone to show that we are educated people, and violence or rudeness will not be acceptable. New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham is planning a major overhaul of the province's post-secondary education system, and has appointed a commission to travel the province and make suggestions by fall 2007.
New Brunswick's five universities are struggling with a lack of funding and too few students, while many community college programs have waiting lists of students hoping to be admitted.

At a news conference in Bathurst on Friday morning, Graham said universities and colleges must change if they are going to succeed.

"There has to be more than just a tweaking," Graham said. "We recognize that for our universities and community colleges to succeed, there's going to have to be some transformational changes brought forward to allow us to be competitive."

About a dozen faculty and students from the University of New Brunswick Saint John made a surprise appearance at Monday night's council meeting to express concern over a report that may recommend their school merge with a community college.

The report, on post-secondary education in New Brunswick, is expected to be released Friday.

The group, which did not have a presentation on the meeting's agenda, said their fears were fanned by a quote in the francophone press by Jacques L'Écuyer, co-chair of the New Brunswick Commission on Post-Secondary Education.

L'Écuyer suggested the commission was considering recommending that the university cater its programs to energy-related fields to complement the city's coming energy boom, with the refurbishment of the Point Lepreau generating station and a proposed second Irving Oil refinery.

The report brings with it recommendations for change to many institutions in the province, the biggest perhaps to U.N.B.S.J. The Commission is recommending turning the Saint John Campus and New Brunswick Community College in Saint John to a polytechnic school which would offer some first and second year university programs.

polytechnics are seen as a solid middle ground, capable of meeting many of the labour market demands for skilled professionals in today's society. 。。。


其实还有很多各个方面的News Release，包括报纸，电视，收音台。

很多都指出了此高教委的建议有省长在背后的强大支持。

现在如果省议院内都支持他的话，可能这个建议就会变成事实。

这个建议的是否被认可，不关系到每个人的Vote，而是各个省内参与投票的台上人。

下面的事情，就是要不停的说服省里能说上话的各级领导，要他们反对。

可以以任何方式，可以以任何代表，给省力发信。

还有这个事情，不管国会的事情，因为加拿大的法律，教育是由每个省自治的。


对国际留学生的直接影响会比当地人的影响更大，学语言的同学没有未来保障。一些低年级在读的同学，可能还要搬家，更有转学的时候，别的学校还有卡掉很多学分。已经毕业的同学，那张文凭就会很搞笑。加之，在本地已经投资的同学，是不是要搬家。那已经投资的项目如何？占UNBSJ1/5的中国学生显然没有在此高教调查委的关心内，那我们是不是可以集体投诉政府，民族歧视呢！
