Students seeking English-as-a-second-language training in Saint John soon may not be able to get the education.

As of April 1, this year's budget for ESL classes will be spent and the school district and Education Department say there are no promises that the funding will continue.

"Our intent is certainly to do everything that we possibly can, within our means, to provide a service to students who require it," said Susan Tipper, superintendent of District 8. "At this point in time, I can't say this many students will be without service, this many will have service, or even if we'll discontinue service."

About 200 students use the ESL tutoring program in School District 8. The provincial government provides $600 per student to cover one year of language training but many students need longer training and the school district has gone over budget, said Tipper.

"We'll review the amount. We'll review the duration of the program and we'll see if the formula needs to be adjusted," said Education Minister Kelly Lamrock.

The government released its population growth strategy on Tuesday. It said the province wants to increase its population by 100,000 by 2026 with a focus on immigration and promoting multiculturalism.
