Montreal police are prepared to clamp down on any mayhem that may erupt after Thursday night's NHL playoff game, although they won't reveal their strategy to avoid a repeat of Monday's violence.
"We never give the strategies to the public," Insp. Paul Chablo told CBC News on Thursday morning."You can't tell people in advance how the police are going to intervene because unfortunately there are some people who would use that to plan, to counteract our intervention."
Chablo said police will be heavily patrolling Montreal's downtown streets Thursday, when the Canadiens take on the Philadelphia Flyers at the Bell Centre for the first game of the second round of the playoffs.
Chablo hinted that police will be bused in, instead of bringing cruisers — a popular target for rioters. Police will have a helicopter available if it's needed, and will get backup help from the RCMP and Quebec provincial police.Chablo said police have decided not to close Montreal's main downtown street, Ste-Catherine, although it is a future possibility.
