SAINT JOHN - Advance polling numbers thrust Ivan Court into an early lead and the gap widened from there.

The third-term councillor had pledged to stand up against big business and the voters of Saint John responded to that credo.

Ivan Court will be Saint John's 65th Mayor.

John Ferguson, who ran a relatively close second in the beginning, saw the city's top job slowly slip from his grasp as the numbers came in.

Michelle Hooton's flash and bang campaign fizzled in the end, leaving her trailing in a modest third the entire evening.

And then there's Norm.

In 1999 Norm MacFarlane was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the provincial riding of Saint John Lancaster, and shortly became the New Brunswick Minister of Labour.

In 2000 he became the Minister of Training and Employment Development.

On May 10th, 2004, he was sworn in as Mayor of Saint John, however, in front of a roomful of Court supporters, he conceded.

One item of note, of all four wards and at large councillors, not one female will sit at the horseshoe this term.
