[B][SIZE="4"]There is a lot to be learned from this tragedy, and I hope that the media do not avert their eyes.

Other media are reporting that Josh Lall had phoned his family, saying that "something was very wrong, and that he was having a breakdown or something". The Calgary Herald is reporting that in the 2 weeks prior to the tragedy, he was said to have heard "voices in his head". This case is beginning to sound like the onset of schizophrenia, or some other psychosis.

And 2 weeks was enough time to avert a tragedy, or was it?

It is time that we addressed the systemic shortcomings in dealing with mental illness in our country.

Mental illness is a life-threatening condition, and it is time we face it.

There are no telethons for mental illness, celebrities do not go on talk shows to talk about their breakdowns (although Margot Kidder may have tried). Our society hushes it up, and ignores it.

How many people would know what to do if a colleague started exhibiting signs of mental illness? How many of us would even attempt to become involved? Most of us would retreat, and leave it to the family. But the family in this case, was a continent away. And the nuclear family -- a wife with 3 young children, would not have been best equipped to handle it. Where was the community support system in all of this?

I am willing to bet that Calgary has no emergency psych beds. The mental health system is overburdened, and has a hard time absorbing new cases. And the system is not equipped to respond except when something terrible happens -- patients cannot be committed until they are demonstrably a danger to themselves and/or others. Often there are no signs that something tragic is about to happen, just strange and disturbing behaviour.

We need to start talking about these issues, and start coming up with ways of preventing similar future tragedies.

I feel very connected to this story; both my husband and I are EVDS alumni, it is where we met and fell in love. It is a small and close community, and even though we live far away and graduated long ago, we feel connected to Josh Lall and his family. I hope that starting a discussion about the state of the mental health care system, and how we all treat the mentally ill, will help make some sense of this and avert another terrible tragedy.[/SIZE][/B]
