Mayor Ivan Court to Present at Provincial “Tax Options” hearing
Saint John Mayor Ivan Court and the City of Saint John’s Commissioner of Finance Greg Yeomans will make a presentation to the Government of New Brunswick Select Committee on Tax Review on Tuesday, July 8th. The presentation will take place as part of the nine public hearings being held around the province in response to options in the Committee’s A Discussion Paper on New Brunswick’s Tax System released in June.
The City’s presentation will highlight how the proposed changes detailed in the discussion paper will affect the City and its citizens.
“We are working towards making Saint John a sustainable(可以养的起的 足够支撑的) community, using a whole systems approach of balanced economic, environmental, social and cultural needs and priorities,” says Commissioner Yeomans. “We want to ensure that the provincial government knows how these proposed changes will affect not only the municipality of Saint John but our citizens as well.”
The presentation from the City will touch on the affects of:

A proposed carbon tax

Removal of decision making power and autonomy from municipalities as a result of manipulation of the assessment base

The importance of integrating the report by Jean-Guy Finn, Commissioner on the Future of Local Governance – the result of which will be an Action Plan outlining governance options and strategies aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of local governments and the communities they serve – into proposed tax changes.
Mayor Ivan Court is also New Brunswick’s representative on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). “This is a discussion about where we want our tax money to go,” says Mayor Court. “Residential taxation alone cannot meet the needs of the city and everyone – the City and our citizens – are being asked to do more with less.”
The public are invited to attend the hearings on Tuesday, July 8th at the Delta Brunswick Hotel. The hearings will begin at 1pm and are scheduled to wrap up at 6:30pm.
