[COLOR="DarkRed"]“As the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour prepares to team up with CareerBeacon.Com for the province's 10th Virtual Career Fair/Expo d'emploi virtuel Oct. 29 - Nov. 5, Minister Ed Doherty says there has never been a better time to be here in New Brunswick.

"To achieve self-sufficiency, this government is working to create an environment for economic growth over the short and long-term," Doherty said. “Despite pressures and uncertainties elsewhere, the province's economy has some positive indicators that cause us to be optimistic."

Doherty said his department is taking concrete steps to ensure the labour market is strong in New Brunswick.

This includes supporting specialized training for workers as the province prepares for future construction projects and moving forward with plans to modernize the province's apprenticeship program.

Doherty announced earlier this year in the Post-Secondary Education Action Plan that government has committed to increasing the apprenticeship program capacity from 3,630 to 6,200 by 2012-13. This year, there are increased seats in the New Brunswick Community College and pilot projects to encourage older workers to participate in the labour force.

"We are placing a firm focus on building skills and ensuring that the education offered is quality education," he said. “Our plan to build a more collaborative, responsive, post-secondary education system will help prepare New Brunswickers for the labour market challenges of the future.”

Doherty said that a unique feature to mark the 10th anniversary of the Virtual Career Fair/Expo d'emploi virtuel is the addition of a wide variety of entry-level positions.

"We are conscious of the number of people entering the labour market for the first time, who are shut out of many jobs that require considerable experience, so we are going to offer them special postings," the minister explained. "When we say entry-level, we mean requiring experience of less than one year."

Business New Brunswick Minister Greg Byrne, who is the minister responsible for the Population Growth Secretariat, said that the Virtual Career Fair / Expo d'emploi virtuel complements the province’s efforts to encourage more people to live and work in New Brunswick.

"From a population growth standpoint, this exactly the type of initiative we need to retain current New Brunswickers and also recruit newcomers to be in this place and make our province self-sufficient," Byrne said.

"In our various repatriation and recruitment missions, we have always tried to bring real job opportunities to potential New Brunswickers. The reality is there are many job opportunities in this province and the Virtual Career Fair puts them on display.”

Last week, the Government of New Brunswick launched a campaign to promote the province as an ideal place to live and work. The bilingual campaign will feature the success stories of seven New Brunswickers who are either immigrants; former New Brunswickers who have returned; or New Brunswickers who have decided to stay in the province.

"Our approach has always been to tell people who may want to be in New Brunswick that we have the quality of life and the nature beauty they are looking for, but we also have great employers and great careers too," said Byrne.
