The Energy and Utilities Board is gift-wrapping a present for New Brunswick drivers that it will unveil at 12:01 Christmas morning.

Robert Jones, the CBC's gas guru, predicts that the energy regulator will cut the maximum pump price by 4.5 cents per litre in its regular price setting on Thursday morning.

"So prices should be down in the 69-cent-a-litre range in a lot of communities," Jones said.

"So don't even think about going downstairs and opening your presents, just get in the car, go down to the gas station, that's where all the joy will be."

The current maximum price for regular self-serve gasoline is 74.34 cents per litre. So a 4.5-cent-per-litre drop in prices would bring the cost below the 70-cent-a-litre threshold for most New Brunswick communities.

Gasoline retailers are permitted to add a delivery cost to their prices of up to two cents a litre.

According to the gasbuddy.com website, the average Canadian gas price is 76.355 cents a litre, down dramatically from $1.01 a litre a year ago. The average Ontario gas price is 68.915 cents a litre, according to the website.

New Brunswick is among the five lowest provinces in gas prices. A year ago, New Brunswick gas prices hit $1.05 a litre.

The fall in gas prices is credited to tumbling crude oil prices in the last week. Jones said diesel and home-heating prices should also take a three-cent-a- litre cut.
