[SIZE="5"][COLOR="Red"]The University of New Brunswick is warning students and staff to be wary of emails asking for personal information as the institution has been hit by a spam scheme.

An email circulating through the university community claims to be from UNB, and tells people their web accounts will expire unless they send in their account names, passwords and birth dates.

Terry Soucy, a systems analyst at the university, said there's a small risk of identity theft through this scheme. But Soucy said for the most part, it appears that the plot is an attempt to hijack the university's website to deliver spam to people using UNB email accounts.

"When it comes to phishing for web-mail user-name passwords, they're not looking for your information, they're looking for the ability to bulk-send email through your service or your account," Soucy said.

"That way, they can continue to generate more money by spamming more users."

The individuals behind the email are looking for the necessary information so they can log into users' email accounts and send mass emails to sell their products.

Soucy said as with any suspicious emails, people should never send any personal or vital information, and with this latest scheme, is advising people to just delete and ignore the message.[/COLOR][/SIZE]
