Conservative MLA Trevor Holder is calling on the governing Liberals to find some money to refurbish the Canada Games Stadium at UNBSJ.

Area residents and the city government have made it clear that the stadium is a number one recreational priority, however, the provincial government's funding contribution is still missing, said the MLA for Saint John Portland, where the stadium is located.

"The province has been approached for a contribution of $1.4 million in funding for the project," Holder said. "Everyone is ready to move on this project except for the province. I am calling on them to get on board."

Funds totaling $2.8 million have been secured, he said. The city of Saint John has committed $1 million to the project and Emera Brunswick Pipeline another $1 million. If funding can be secured from the federal and provincial governments, UNBSJ has agreed to contribute $800,000.

The total budget for the refurbishment is $5.6 million, which could be met if the federal government matches the $1.4 million contribution being asked of the province.

"This is a great infrastructure project, a great way to create jobs. Put shovels in the ground, invest in the community and in the end you have a facility for recreational use and one capable of hosting national sporting events," Holder said.

"The economic spin-offs are obvious as are the recreational possibilities. This is not only important from an economic point of view this is also about health and wellness in our community."

Although Energy Minister Jack Keir, MLA for Fundy-River Valley, and Premier Shawn Graham both say they support the project, they have said the money is not there because the province is making a $45-million investment in the city's community college system this year.

"There is local and provincial interest in improving this facility," Holder said. "The Jeux de l'Acadie (Acadian Games) scheduled for June 2010 is anxious to use the stadium. It would be great we could have the renovations complete by then."
