The number of people diagnosed with swine flu in New Brunswick has jumped by more than 50 per cent since last Thursday.

There have been 33 confirmed cases in the province, New Brunswick Health Department officials reported Monday.

On Thursday, the province confirmed three more cases of swine flu bringing the total to 20 cases. But by Monday, the number had jumped to 33.

As of Monday, the province has the capacity to complete all stages of testing for the H1N1 virus at the pandemic lab at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont Regional Hospital in Moncton, officials said.

Previously, samples had to be sent to the national lab in Winnipeg for confirmation.

"This means we will have reliable numbers sooner in order to monitor trends in the spread of the virus," Dr. Paul Van Buynder, deputy chief medical officer of health, said in a release.

"It is important to remember that patients have been receiving and will continue to receive the appropriate treatment right away, without waiting for lab confirmation."

He reminded New Brunswickers to wash their hands often and thoroughly, and to cough or sneeze into their sleeves in order to control the spread of the virus.

People who have flu-like symptoms should stay home and minimize contact with family members as much as possible. If symptoms persist or get worse, they should visit their doctor, a walk-in clinic, or the nearest hospital emergency department.
