[SIZE="3"]Saint John police cannot explain why a man jumped off an overpass following a car crash north of Grand Bay-Westfield last week.

The police force's major crime unit has closed its investigation into a strange two-car collision and subsequent fatality last Friday at 9:30 p.m.

Police determined the man who jumped off an overpass following the crash claimed his own life.

Sgt. Pat Bonner said the man's car struck a vehicle carrying four people. After the crash, the man ran past the damaged vehicle, jumped the guardrail next to the overpass and fell to his death.

"We don't know why he did what he did. It was obviously fatal and certainly traumatic."

Bonner said the four people in the other car received only minor injuries.

Bonner said there's no evidence to indicate the man was trying to flee the scene.

No cars were driving beneath the overpass on Route 177 at the time of the man's fall.[/SIZE]
