Fredericton死亡枪击案

[SIZE="3"]Fredericton police are investigating a shooting death of a former city councillor in front of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Tuesday night.

Police have identified Tony Cameron, who served on Fredericton council from 1989 to 1999, as the individual who shot himself.

Along with being a prominent city councillor, Cameron, 66, was trained as a probation officer and also worked as a cab driver in the capital city.

Fredericton police and CBC News normally do not report on suicides but Cameron was a well-known citizen in the area.

Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside, who served on council with Cameron, issued a brief statement on Wednesday morning, expressing his sympathies for his former colleague's family.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my friend and former city council colleague Tony Cameron. He was a great supporter of our city and served his community well," Woodside said.

'Obviously in some distress'
Const. Ralph Currie said Fredericton police received a 911 call at 7:03 p.m. on Tuesday from Cameron who was "obviously in some distress." Currie said Cameron told the dispatcher that he was on the hospital grounds.

"The initial response member who arrived within two minutes of the call, within seconds of arriving there was a discharge of a firearm, subsequent to that a gentleman was pronounced dead," he said.

It is expected that the Fredericton police will wrap up the investigation on Wednesday.

Currie worked with Cameron when he was a probation officer in the Fredericton area.

"Obviously [his death is] very upsetting. As normal, one doesn't expect someone to die at an early age. It's something that we have to deal with," Currie said.

"He was a good guy, he was very good at doing what he did … as a probation officer he was always there, he dealt with young offenders for most of the time that I worked with Tony."[/SIZE]
