[SIZE="3"]A Fredericton cabbie was taken to hospital after a lunch-hour collision in the city's downtown Wednesday.

The three-car crash occurred around 12:22 p.m. at the intersection of York and Charlotte streets, a corner that one resident said is regularly the site of such incidents.

Const. Ralph Currie said the taxi driver was taken to hospital for observation.

Currie said the incident involved a south-bound taxi on York Street, a pickup truck that was travelling north on the same street and a van that was travelling east on Charlotte Street.

"It appears the van came out onto York, struck the taxi and caused the taxi to go into the path of the oncoming truck," Currie said.

He said the driver of the van was issued a ticket.

Don Roberts, 79, was sitting down to lunch when he heard the jarring impact.

"I've never heard such a crash in my life," said the York Street resident.

He said something needs to be done about the intersection.

"There are accidents on this corner every week," he said.

Though he didn't see Wednesday's collision, he said he has seen cars turning off of Charlotte Street fail to stop.

"People come around so quick," he said as firefighters cleaned up the crash debris.

Jennifer Peterson, a 22-year-old stay-at-home mother, was on the sidewalk near the intersection when the crash occurred.

"I had to sit down, I'm shaking," said Peterson, who was a victim of a car-pedestrian collision earlier this year.

"It all happened so quickly."

She said other witnesses jumped to action after the collision. They broke a window on the taxi and got in to help stabilize the driver and hold up his head until emergency responders arrived.

"He was mumbling," she said, and appeared to be in shock.

Currie said the driver didn't appear to have any serious injuries.[/SIZE]
