[SIZE="3"]The RCMP are in the final stages of an investigation into the case of Luc Begin, the off-duty soldier who has accused the Fredericton police of beating him outside a city nightclub.

In the aftermath of the incident, which was caught on video by a blogger, Fredericton police asked the RCMP to conduct investigations into whether city police did anything wrong in how they handled Begin and whether the soldier should be charged with obstruction.

Sgt. Claude Tremblay said the two investigations have been taking some time but are nearing a conclusion.

"There's a lot of witnesses in this matter, a lot of them. All policy has to be reviewed and how Fredericton town police policies work, within the town," Tremblay said.

"Everything has to be studied and everything has to be done completely. And the members who are doing it are not from the region here, so there's always a little bit of travelling involved. But hopefully we'll have a resolution to this pretty soon."

Begin claims he was mistakenly identified by staff at the Sweetwaters club in Fredericton's bar district on July 18 for an individual who had caused trouble there two weeks earlier.

Begin said he was trying to explain that to Fredericton police officers when he was jumped from behind.

Begin filed a complaint with the Fredericton police and the New Brunswick Police Commission after[COLOR="Red"] alleging at least two local police officers assaulted him outside the nightclub[/COLOR].

One Fredericton city police officer was suspended after the incident.

Although Begin said he did nothing to provoke the encounter, the Fredericton police later said they'd had an earlier encounter with Begin on July 10.

Begin, normally based at CFB Valcartier in Quebec, said in a July interview that he was supposed to be deployed to Afghanistan in October 2010.

But the infantry private said he suffered a broken vertebra during the altercation and it could cost him his tour of duty.[/SIZE]
