Rebates on new taxes in ON & BC., not for NB, even we have HST.

In some provinces, customers pay two separate sales taxes -- a provincial sales tax and the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Each province has its own rules, list of taxable products and set of exemptions. But two provinces have recently said they will blend their taxes with the GST. Ontario unveiled its Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in March in its 2009 budget while British Columbia announced its plans in July. Both new taxes should take effect on July 1, 2010

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland all harmonized their taxes with the GST in 1997. The 13% blended tax is collected by the federal government and distributed to the provinces. Quebec harmonized its sales tax in 1997 as well, but the provincial government handles the administration instead of Ottawa.

To smooth the introduction of the new tax, the Ontario government will make cash payments totaling $1,000 to families earning less than $160,000 and payments of $300 for individuals earning less than $80,000 annually. Ontario and B.C. will also offer ongoing tax credits to low-income families, worth roughly $260 annually to folks in Ontario and $230 for B.C. residents who qualify.

We live in New Brunswick, which is one of the provinces with the introduction of HST. However we never be able to receive any tax credit to alleviate our spending. As mentioned Ontario tax credit is increased to $1,000 from $100 upon the new OHST. This is relatively increased in our cost of living in NB on comparing with ON or BC.
