Urn with human ashes turns up at Value Village

Employees at a Value Village in East Saint John got an unusual donation over the weekend: an urn filled with human ashes.

Leisa Dube, who was processing donations on Saturday, said a co-worker found the urn inside a filing cabinet.

She said the staff's curiosity was piqued when they saw the crematorium sticker on the outside of the urn.

"Our recycler didn't realize what it was right away, so he had pried it up, and you could actually see that there was a bag in it with ash and what looked like bone fragments," Dube said.

Darren Allaby, the store manager, said the police were called immediately to deal with the remains.

He said he thinks the donation was probably an accident.

"It's not something that happens every day," Allaby said. "It's happened a couple of times in my nine years in the company, a couple other times in this store."

Allaby said dealing with unusual donations is part of the job.

"Somebody's glass eyes were donated in a little baggy," he said. "It said on it, 'Dad's eyes.' We probably will sell those."

Saint John police said they were able to find the rightful owners of the urn, and the family was happy for the safe return of their accidentally donated uncle.
