Oromocto RCMP are asking for the public's assistance in locating a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in connection with an assault involving a handgun.

Lonnie Dellas Carr, 45, of Fredericton Junction, was charged Tuesday in Burton provincial court with several offences, including aggravated assault, discharging a firearm and evading police, Sgt. Pierre Gervais said Thursday.

Carr, who did not appear in court and has not entered a plea, was charged following an incident in Fredericton Junction on Jan. 23, about 7:30 a.m., he said.

A suspect used a handgun to gain entry to a residence of an acquaintance and committed an assault before fleeing, Gervais said.

The victim, who suffered serious, but not life threatening injuries, was treated in hospital and released. The injuries did not include any gun shot wounds, said Gervais.

He declined to say whether the victim was a man or a woman to protect the person's identity.

Carr, who is believed to still be in the Fredericton Junction area, has a history of violence and is believed to be carrying a firearm, said Gervais.

"The RCMP reminds the public to call them immediately if the suspect is seen and not to approach him," he said.

"We encourage Mr. Carr to give himself up to police."
