The Regent Mall is going to get a sassy, sophisticated new look with [B][COLOR="red"]$13 million[/COLOR][/B] in renovations announced by its owners Cadillac Fairview of Ontario.

The revitalization project begins next week and should be completed by November.

The work will be phased in during the next seven months to minimize shopper and tenant inconvenience, said Colleen Parent-Meade, general manager of Regent Mall.

When the work is done, expect to see [COLOR="Red"][B]new floor and ceiling treatments, new lighting, refurbished entrances, new and renovated washrooms, new soft seating areas and a renovated food court with new seating areas.[/B][/COLOR]

"[B]In an increasingly competitive consumer environment, customers are demanding a better shopping experience,[/B]'' said Parent-Meade.

"Recognizing this trend, Regent Mall needs to rejuvenate to present a fresh and updated look for our retail clients and our shoppers.

"The newly renovated shopping centre will offer exceptional shopping choices via first-to-market retailers, a premier service commitment and an enhanced level of comfort for the entire family," she said.

First-to-market retailers refers to stores that are found in the mall and not at any other locations in the city, said Myrna Brideau, the mall's marketing director.

"We want people when they are here to be comfortable and stay comfortable. It will be a whole new look. You won't recognize it," Brideau said Tuesday.

Currently, 100 per cent of the mall is leased, but the renovation will help the mall remain attractive to national retailers, to customers and to its tenants, she said.

Renovations to the food court will reconfigure and modernize that space, but won't compromise seating, she said.

Regent Mall, which opened in 1976, is home to 115 stores.

The mall has 43,200-square-metres, or 480,000-square-feet, of retail shopping under one roof.

Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. has been in the commercial real estate business for more than 50 years. It owns or manages 84 properties across North America and has a portfolio worth $17 billion.

Cadillac-Fairview is wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, which invests to secure the retirement income of 284,000 active and retired teachers in Ontario.
