A 30-year-old Fredericton man is recovering in hospital after what friends call an unprovoked attack early on Sunday morning.

The man, whose name is not being released, suffered a broken jaw, a severe concussion, a lacerated spleen and liver along with other bruising.

Tony Bettle is a close friend of the man who was found unconscious outside St. Dunstan's Church in downtown Fredericton. Days after the vicious attack, Bettle and the victim's family are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Tony Bettle said friends and family of the victim have no idea what sparked the Sunday morning attack.

"I've known him for 20 years. He's the last person in the world that would ever create a situation that would result in these kinds of injuries," Bettle said.

"From what I gather, it seems like he never even saw it coming, which is the most disturbing part of the whole situation."

Bettle said his friend is heavily sedated in a Moncton hospital and has no memory of the assault.

Const. Ralph Currie, a Fredericton Police spokesman, said investigators are concentrating on the time period between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Sunday when the victim left the city's bar district on foot.

Const. Ralph Currie says no witnesses of the Sunday morning attack have come forward to the Fredericton Police.

"As to who he was assaulted by, it's still unknown. And there's probably close to a two-hour window where no one seems to know what this gentleman had done from one point, to being located," Currie said.

The victim remembers leaving a bar around 2 a.m. and he was then found laying in a driveway by two deliverymen about two hours later.

The police spokesman said it's believed the victim left the downtown bar area in an effort to find a taxi.

So far no witnesses have come forward.

The Fredericton Police are asking for the public's assistance in tracking down anyone with information on the attack.

The severity of the beating and its seemingly random nature hasn't been seen since a string of so-called "swarming" attacks in Fredericton almost three years ago.

The latest attack is not being called a swarming now. However, the victim was carrying cash and none of it was taken.
