Mount Allison University officially opened a new business centre Friday named after the Tim Hortons co-founder whose $5-million donation made it possible.

The Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies will bolster the Sackville, N.B., campus' business faculty, offer scholarships to needy students, and allow the commerce department to enter the big leagues of business education, says university president Robert Campbell.

"On a day like today, we really feel that we've rolled up the rim and won the grand prize," Campbell said, referencing the popular Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim to Win contest.

Joyce, 80, is a Tatamagouche, N.S., native who made Tim Hortons one of the most successful brands in Canadian history. He is also a member of the Order of Canada and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

The centre is in the campus' Avard-Dixon Building and contains an open-style community meeting place, new case rooms, and boardrooms that double as tutorial or seminar rooms.

Joyce's donation also included funds to create new teaching positions and attract visiting scholars and executives-in-residence.

The university has also said the money will be used to increase student conference travel, field trips, guest speaker series, case competitions, international exchanges, summer internships, and research opportunities.

Joyce, who dropped out of school in Grade 9, said it was a "great reward" to have the centre named after him.

His advice to business students is to never be satisfied.

"You gotta remember, it's never good enough," he said. "Be better and better at what you do, and I think that's what this place is all about."
