To Faculty, Staff and Students:

UNB is always concerned about the safety and welfare
of students, faculty and staff, both while on our
campuses and when traveling abroad. There has been
a great amount of attention paid to the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)
issue in the media in recent days.
The following procedures are in place to deal with this issue at this time.
When different information becomes available, this will be taken into
consideration and acted upon
by the university.

* All university-related travel to City of Hanoi,
Vietnam; the People's Republic of China
including the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region; Singapore; and Taiwan is postponed
until later notice. This is in accordance with
Health Canada and Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT)
communiqus.

* Travel from these areas has not been restricted
by the Canadian government. By order of Health
Canada and the World Health Organization
(WHO), all persons (including our faculty, staff
and students) returning from Asia will undergo
health checks in the country of departure and
upon entering Canada. All faculty, staff and
students returning from these areas are being
requested by the university to contact their family
physician or a public health nurse upon return.
All persons traveling from these areas have been
given advice by health officials regarding the
signs and symptoms of SARS and the appropriate
action to take in the event of onset of
symptoms.

* We are in contact with faculty and staff who are
working abroad in these areas at the present
time. We are updating them on the situation in
Canada and requesting information related to the
status of SARS in their region. At UNB Saint
John, the majority of our involvement is in Beijing
(northern China), which is far from the centre of
the outbreak in Hong Kong (southern China).

* In addition to receiving updates from Health
Canada and DFAIT, we are in contact with
Canadian embassies in the affected regions and
also Citizenship and Immigration Canada. All of
our internal policies are based on the best advice
available from these organizations at the present
time.

If you have concerns about SARS as IT relates to
university policy, please contact the Office of the
Associate Vice-President (Saint John at UNB Saint John
(rdionne@unbsj.ca) or the International Office at UNB
Saint John (ilo-sj@unbsj.ca) and your queries will be
relayed to the appropriate person(s).

Sincerely,
