Saint John-area residents are paying their respects to a Chinese high school student who died last week in hospital following a near drowning.

A memorial service is being held Wednesday for Yi Fan Wang, the 17-year-old Chinese student who died in hospital last week after nearly drowning at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre two days earlier.

Jennifer Li, president of the Chinese Cultural Association of Saint John, said Wang managed to make a big impression in a short time.

Wang had just started classes at Simonds High School.

"Even [though] he only lived in Saint John 18 days, he died, but he lived in our hearts. We want to let Yi Fan know we all love him."

She said Wang's parents wanted the service to pay tribute to their son, but also to thank the people of Saint John.

"They know in Saint John their son got lot of love, lot of care and since they came Saint John they got lot of support and help. They really appreciate everyone to do this."

She said the Wang's host parents took the death hard.

The cause of the accident and cause of death are still under investigation.

Wang's parents expect to fly back to China on Thursday with their son's body.

Yifan died last week, two days after an accident in the main pool of the Canada Games Aquatic Centre. He had been assigned to Simonds High School through the English as an additional language program and had been in the city only 18 days when he died.

A memorial service on Wednesday was delivered in both Chinese and English and attended by about 200 mourners, who came to the chapel of Brenan's Funeral Home to pay their respects. Representatives from the City of Saint John, Simonds High School and the Canada Games Aquatic Centre were among those in attendance.

A ribbon hanging from a floral arrangement atop the casket was embossed with the names of his parents, Xiang Yang Wang and Meifang Wang, and inscribed with the words "You are my baby forever" in Chinese. Two photographs of the young man were also displayed, one as a child, and another of the young man he had become.

Rev. Dr. Steven Cho translated parts of the eulogy, delivered by the young man's father, Xiang Yang Wang, for the English-speaking mourners in attendance.

Xiang Yang Wang said that, when he said goodbye to his son at Shanghai Airport in early September, he hadn't expected it would be the last time he would see him alive.

"I love you. You are a smart boy, the only son I have," Wang said.

"You showed honour and respect to your grandparents. Before you left, I took you to Hunan province to tour and you enjoyed it so much. You told me to take time to take your grandparents to go see the Great Wall.

"I know you are a very thoughtful son. I have precious memories of you and I praying, bowling and going fishing together. We have all the great times.

"I never thought this would happen when we were saying goodbye.

"I am very proud of you for being so smart and when you were accepted in Simonds High.

"Yifan, goodbye. I love you so much. See you in heaven."

Jennifer Li, president of the Chinese Cultural Association of Saint John, thanked the community for its "outpouring of love and concern" and told mourners that Yifan will live on in the hearts of his parents, friends and loved ones.

"Eighteen days of your life is short, but for the people of Saint John, you have left an unforgettable mark," she said.

"Length is only one aspect of a life, but the quality and meaning of life are the real essences.

"You were a true friend and a good student who brought pride to your parents and your extended family."

Yifan was born in Yangzhou, China. Besides his parents, he is survived by grandparents and great-grandparents in China.

His body will be flown to China this week.

Yifan was pulled from the Aquatic Centre's pool on Sunday, Sept. 18, during a public swim, after police received a 911 call in the middle of the afternoon about a possible drowning. When police arrived lifeguards were trying to resuscitate the young man, who was transported to hospital where he died two days later.

Police have said foul play is not suspected.
