I’m a Student in UNBSJ and I come from China. I read your words on CBC and your talking really made my friends and I up sad.
I can’t believe those words came from our president.
First of all, I don’t think your opinions are objective. You only see one side of Chinese students. Some of them did buy brand new sports cars. However, the majority still take bus to school.
Second, your words expressed a wrong image to the whole society. It will have a huge impact on Chinese students. People in Saint John will think all Chinese students are rich and don’t care about their money. There were many broke-ins among Chinese students. I’m afraid that it will cause more broke-ins happen. As students, we need safe living environment.
Third, you said: “most of the Chinese students on campus are affluent and can afford higher costs”. I want to ask you some questions. Have you ever thought from student side? Have you talked to a Chinese student about his or her opinion? Have you noted that the tuition is high and students are disappointed?
I want to give you a simple calculation and it will approve high Canadian dollars do affect Chinese Students.
In August, 2002, 100 Canadian dollars = 522 RMB (Approximate)
In Augest, 2003, 100 Canadian dollars = 584 RMB (Approximate)
In January, 2004, 100 Canadian dollars = 647 RMB (Approximate)
For example, One Chinese student’s tuition in 2002-2003 academic year( Sep to Apr) was $9068 Canadian dollars. It equalled ￥47334.96 RMB. One Chinese student’s tuition in 2003-2004 academic year (Sep to Apr) was $9777.00 Canadian dollars. It equalled ￥63257.19 RMB( at $1CA = ￥6.47 RMB) and ￥57097.68 RMB ( at $1CA=￥5.84 RMB).
According to the example, a Chinese student spend ￥9762.72 RMB to ￥15922.23 RMB more only on tuition expense.
Fourth, you said: “the students in trouble are the ones who didn't properly plan for changes in the currency”. I think it really doesn’t make sense. First of all, we are student. We are in the University to learn how to knowledge in order to plan for changes in the currency. We are not economist and even economist didn’t expect Canadian dollars appreciate to this much. There is a Chinese student whose GPA is 4.1 and he will say the same thing as other Chinese students says. We say “the U.S. dollar is going up so let's exchange some U.S. dollars for Canadian dollars”.
At the end, I think your words are not objective and you shouldn’t say to the public with your subjective opinion as Vice president in the university.
Your words really made all Chinese students disappointed. I hope you can apologize to all Chinese students.

I am an international student of UNBSJ from China. I listened the CBC morning News on Feb 12, 2004. Here is your response about the attitudes of Chinese students towards the low US exchange rate:

After I listened and read the news, I found I was insult from what you said. And it does hurts. I am not that kind of students which you considered "affluent". My family works very hard to support me for my education. And I myself work very hard too. I addmit that what you said is partly true, but it is only just partly true.I believe there are a lot of students like me would not be happy if they heard the news. It is inresponseble for you to say that. some of students lost hundreds even thounds of dolor because of the rise of Canadian dolor.

We read your comments published on February 12th CBC, and we are astonished and upset by your talking on Chinese students. It is hard to believe that the words actually came from a university vice President!
First of all, we do not think your opinions are objective. You have only seen one side of Chinese students. Some of them did buy brand new sport cars. However, the majority still take bus to school.

As students, we have our tolerances of taking costs to make our benefits. Have you noted how students are disappointed by the increasing high tuition fees? A simple calculation can show how the international students are affected by the high Canadian dollars.

We are all students, who are here in the university to learn how to knowledge in order to plan for changes in the currency. We are not economists and even economists didn’t expect Canadian dollars appreciate to this much. If we were able to predict this change, why should we still stay in school spending our money but not go to the Wall Street?!
At the end, we feel your words are not objective and you should not make them to the public as a university vice who is supposed to be responsible to all the students on campus.
We feel sorry and disappointed for your inappropriate comments to the public. We are looking forwards to hearing some explanations from the university.

We are sorry bothering you, however we have to send mail to you and let you know about our feeling . Because we are watching, we are listening; we are sharing the same sunshine with you, we are a group of this community.

You are saying "A large number of these students are buying new cars, they're spending a lot of money in the local economy. This is something that does not have a huge big impact on their cost of getting educated here." We want to ask you, do you often go to work by bus in the coldest wintertime? Have you seen all Chinese students wear gold and sliver? Do you really know the actually income of a middle class Chinese family?

If you do not know, we can tell you: A common middle class Chinese family can get 20000-30000 Yuan per year, if both parents get a stable job. One Canadian dollar: one Chinese dollar exchange rate is 1 CAD: 6 RMB. How much is UNB tuition per year?

Most Chinese students are from the middle class of China; their parents are working hard to support the cost of their children. Can you image? Can you feel? The tuition is money of blood and sweat. The increasing University of tuition is not only a problem to Canadian native students; it is also a problem to most Chinese students.

Yes! Some Chinese students buy nice cars, but they are only a few. If we do not misunderstand your saying, you mean the increasing of tuition is a piece of cake to Chinese students, because every Chinese student is rich. We get a question: whether Bill Gates is a rich man in United States can be a nice evidence to verify all Americans are rich? Or whether SJ’s Irving family is a rich family in SJ can be a good proof to verify all families of SJ are rich.

We will argue we are not using our own money, but our parents’ money. The Canadian student borrows money from Canada government; the Chinese students borrow money from parents.

Our Chinese students come to Canada to study, because we believe Canadians are just people. Mr. Kabir, you are the spokesman of a university, your saying is not only affect UNB, but also Canadian society. There is an old saying from your west world: knowing the person rather than the name. It suggests we should see the world as objective being; when we say we really know something, we should really close to it. Like we are making friends, we like to create a good relationship with somebody and we must close with his/her to listen and to speak with the friend.

Mr. Kabir, Please be a friend to us, please really listen to us, speak with us. We know you can do that, and the whole Canadian community can do it also.
