Foreign students can learn, and flip burgers

FREDERICTON ― The federal government is allowing international students to work part-time off campus in a bid to make New Brunswick more attractive to new immigrants.

New Brunswick is the second province after Manitoba to adopt the pilot and provincial officials hope it will help reverse the decline in the province's population.

Dulce Van Harten has roots in the Netherlands and Cape Verde. Like other international students, she's not allowed under federal rules to get a part-time job, unless it's on campus. "So I work at the cafeteria on campus, and it just seems to become very limited, our choice of jobs available."

Federal immigration minister Judy Sgro is hoping to change that. She says within a decade, most of Canada's labour force growth will come from foreign workers. "Some of that growth will almost certainly come from international students attracted to our post-secondary institutions."

Under the two-year pilot program, the rules will be relaxed so that international students can hold jobs off-campus.

Business New Brunswick Minister Peter Mesheau hopes some will be tempted to immigrate here permanently, and reverse the province's population decline.

Mesheau made the pitch directly to foreign students at Thursday's announcement. "We are here to help you access the new program and help make your stay in our beautiful province productive and successful. And maybe one day you will come back, raise a family and be a part of our life."

Full-time students who've completed one year of university will be eligible for off campus jobs of up to 20 hours a week.

是好消息啊。但是，具体怎么实施还没定。肯定有规定和限制的。比如，1。要完成2个本科的学期以上的学生，2。GPA达到一定的要求，3。上学期间，一个星期只能打20个小时。 诸如此类的规定肯定是有的。

总而言之，有工打，总比没工打得好。

这次应该是要实施了。因为曼尼托巴已经实施了。NB只是第二个实施的省份。

谢了，如果真那样就太好了。到时候真出台了学校一定会给留学生发通知什么的吧！

那是一定会的。所以，以后就多留心一下UNB的 EMAIL吧。

难道都没有写什么时候可以开始打工吗？

有没有可能这个SUMMER 就开始呢？

这个就是政府问题了。我们都说不准啊。不过，肯定不会很长的。因为已经有一个省份试验过了。

我觉得这应该是个进步的事情吧，我很同意校外打工合法化，这样会给这里的经济带来更大的发展，也给我们带来更多的机会！！！

[COLOR=orange]收到学校正式通知了，从5月1号开始国际学生可以在校外工作20小时。必须是FULL TIME，而且已经完成1年学业。 [/COLOR]

Pilot project launched by the Federal Citizenship Minister, Judy
Sgro, and N.B. Business Minister, Peter Mesheau.

International students can now work 20 hours a week off campus.

Students must have completed 1 full year of study and continue to
be full time students to be eligible.

This details are still in the process of being finalized and this
program will be in effect in May. The International student advisor Office will
send details as soon as they are available.

This is great new for our international students.
