- The Letter from me, a Chinese International Student

In the past two weeks, about late July 2007, two criminal attacks happened on University Ave, Saint John, NB, Canada. Several Chinese International students physically suffered from beating up by some individuals. Soon after the attacks happened the victims reported to Saint John local police department. Police officers handled these cases in regular procedures. Of course, we would thank for the city police on this behalf for their hard works, however, I have to add a little more about the general police officers. They might be to busy to be racially sensitive about the cases in terms of how they handled the first case. Here I do not have the rights to release any details. Until the second case broke out within 10 days, again on University Ave, the management level of the Police force took is sincerely by adding more police forces perhaps around the university Ave.

These two motivated attacks happened in the past two weeks not only physically and emotionally traumatized the victims, but also seriously disturbed the life of all Chinese students at UNBSJ. Most of Chinese students already knew about these cases by now. There we have to be aware that today we are living in an information technology era. Bad things are traveling some fast. The students are now afraid to walk on university Ave even under the day light. Some new students have even thought about going back to China.

And here, let’s not forget these new immigrants in town. What should be considered in their mind? Is Millidgeville where the university at still a safe area for people to live? Is Saint John still a place embracing internal friends in its best multicultural environment that supposed to have its beautiful culture diversity to offer? Two criminal attacks had just happened within 15 days! WOW! How about the local safety to be considered for the whole Saint John community?

My heart was breaking when I heard that my fellow Chinese friends were beating up by some brainless young people. No one, there is no one should have to undertake such incident in a foreign land, however, Saint John is an actually such friendly and beautiful place in the Maritime Provinces. I know that these criminal acts were definitely not the act representatives of the local community, but I truly know better that Saint John as an immigration developing city, it deserves to have much better things having to offer for the others.

My self, as a senior student in the university, at this point, suddenly felt ever missing home so … much. Even though I want to make Saint John my second home since I been here for about a half of the decade already, if I could, but this place, at this point, how should I consider this placed a HOME, when there was always someone yell to us “ xxx go back to your country.” Is just that hard to live in peace, to enjoy life, to be ourselves?

To tell you the truth, I feel more than upset about the incidents, I feel angry, but I understand I need to calm the anger, because it is not the time to smash things, rather it is the time we need to press the officials to immediately identify the individuals who did hurt our friends, and these individuals have to be lawfully responsible and charged for what they had done.

In recent years, sexual harassment, egg attacking, and verbal abuses often violated international students around the University area, which happened often on University Ave. When egg incident happened two years ago, Chinese Student & Scholar Association took initiative and contacted with the officials in needs. Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, the local Chinese Culture Association, The City of Saint John and The Police Force, including the local Medias and Saint John community as whole had shown their great support. Chinese students believed their student body, and I believe that CSSA would always stand strongly under these solid supports.

“The police will be re-interviewing the victims and will be pressing to identify the individuals responsible.” Yes, for sure, criminal acts have to be handed to the Police Force, and we would love to hold our best faith to it. However, certainly, the criminal acts did cause much grief to the students, to our community, and extend to Saint John community as whole.

The Police will have to take this into a greater consideration than ever. As the concern goes in our Chinese community, I believe that the majority of citizens in Saint John will support us in their best.

Let the CSSA President deals with the local authorities and the university. We should back him up 100% and wait for his directions. Put the letter on hold so that it wont stir up the situation. Keep it cool, and give the local authorities another chance to dig deep into the problem. We want a permenant resolution and this requires some time i believe. We should trust our elected president.
