[quote name='job']Jetsgo could resume operations by summer: report
CTV.ca News Staff

The founder of Jetsgo is hoping to have the discount airline resume operations as soon as June 25, according a report.

Michel Leblanc has crafted a restructuring plan and a timetable to get the airline running again, sources tell The Globe and Mail.

The news comes less than three weeks after some 17,000 passengers were stranded and 1,350 employees found themselves out of work when Jetsgo filed under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, grounding the airline's fleet.

The plans for Jetsgo's comeback strategy include the sale of company-owned aircraft and the use of eight leased planes.

Leblanc confirmed to The Globe that he and his team are working out a plan but declined to comment on any specific date.

"If we can craft a plan that makes sense commercially and brings back a business that's profitable, why not? We're looking at our strengths and weaknesses. We have to act responsibly. There's a good management team and there's a good fleet," he said.

Despite the onslaught of media coverage on Jetsgo's demise, Leblanc was optimistic.

"I admit that the Jetsgo brand has blemishes, but its awareness has picked up," he told the paper.

"So, there's a downside and a good side."

Joseph D'Cruz, Rotman School of Management doesn't think the idea is so far-fetched.

"It's a tough job to do it by June 25 but I'm almost certain that sometime this year he's going to be back flying in Canada," he told Canada AM.

D'Cruz says Jetsgo would have a tough time reemerging as a regular passenger line but could work as a charter airline.

"I think it would be unwise for Michel Leblanc to get into the schedule business again because it will be very difficult for him to regain public confidence, to get people to book tickets in advance, give him their credit cards, etc. I think his best chance is in the charter business.

"He'd be selling flights, not seats, selling flights to tour operators. These are people who are arranging vacation packages so they really take the risk then in terms of making sure that the aircraft is full."

The carrier's attorneys are expected to ask the Quebec Superior Court to extend the April 11 deadline for the airline to file a plan to reorganize Jetsgo.

Jetsgo is also expected to hold talks with creditors to file a proposal by May 15 and have creditors review that plan early in June.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority, overseer of Pearson International Airport, would want "stringent financial rules" in place before agreeing to any plan, GTAA spokeswoman Connie Turner told The Globe.

The GTAA says it is owed $5.5 million by Jetsgo. The airline lost more than $55 million in the eight months before it ceased operations, and owes more than $100 million.

Meanwhile, a job fair organized by the Toronto Board of Trade was set to open for former Jetsgo employees in Toronto on Wednesday. However, Leblanc said the restructured airline would need a smaller group of employees than its previous workforce.

Leblanc's confirmation of a new plan comes less than a week after reports that court-appointed monitor RSM Richter Inc. outlined a restructuring proposal as an option for creditors.

Media reports suggest that at least a couple of Jetsgo creditors are seeking to seize grounded aircraft as remuneration for the $7 million that they are allegedly owed by the discount airline.

NAV Canada and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority have petitioned Quebec's Superior Court to lift a stay in proceedings and allow them to seize part of the grounded fleet in the aftermath of Jetsgo's downfall.
