Since the release of the final report of the Commission on Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick, the discussion has been largely focused on a single recommendation by Commissioners Rick Miner and Jacques L'Ecuyer, namely the proposed creation of a polytechnic to replace UNB Saint John and the Community College. It is clear from the public response that there is much opposition to the idea and we will continue to advocate for a strong UNB presence in Saint John.

However, the time for reaction is over and we must move on to support those recommendations in the Commissioners' report we do agree with and to propose a made-in-New Brunswick solution for government to consider as an alternative to the Miner/L'Ecuyer report. We are now engaged in a productive and respectful dialogue with stakeholders to determine how UNB can play a lead role in the government's quest for self-sufficiency. We envision a system that will build on cooperative relationships in our post-secondary education system to provide an unprecedented number of opportunities for students and researchers. We are excited about taking these ideas to government.

Greg Kealey is coordinating our formal response to the Government of New Brunswick. We have created several planning groups to inform the process and encourage faculty, staff and students to submit ideas and solutions to these groups:

- Al Sharp in Fredericton (scidean@unb.ca) and Robert MacKinnon (rmackinn@unbsj.ca) in Saint John are coordinating the academic study groups in consultation with Kathy Hamer and Jane Fritz;
- Dan Murray (dmurray@unb.ca), and Chris Callbeck (callbeck@unbsj.ca), are coordinating the financial study group;
- John Johnson, (jaj@unbsj.ca) and the Saint John senior management group will work to present an alternative to the Saint John Polytechnic recommendation;
- Bob Skillen and his advancement team will assist with developing the communications and political strategies to advance our story effectively with government and other important constituencies.

The time to respond is immediate, so we ask that any submissions be received by Friday, September 28.

We have a narrow window of opportunity to affect change in post-secondary education, and we invite you to be a part of it. We will continue to update the UNB community as information becomes available.

Thank you for your e‑mail regarding the recently released report of the Commission on Post‑Secondary Education in New Brunswick (Commission).



This government acted quickly in appointing an independent commission to examine the many post‑secondary issues facing the province, to seek input from New Brunswickers, and make recommendations on the future of post‑secondary education and training in the province. The Commissioners were asked to make recommendations that will help strengthen and build upon post‑secondary education to make it more accessible, collaborative, competitive and relevant. The intent is to utilize resources in a more effective way to prepare New Brunswickers to contribute their full potential to society and the economy.



Now that the Commission has submitted its report, Advantage New Brunswick: A Province Reaches to Fulfill its Destiny, the government will need to consider the recommendations and make decisions on implementing those that will improve the sector for students and for New Brunswick, and further our objective to build the best education system in the country as we work towards the goal of making our province self‑sufficient.



I want to emphasize that no decisions have been made as of yet. The government will be listening to stakeholders before responding to the report. We welcome the input you and many others have provided. It will help the government in making the difficult decisions needed to build a better system for post‑secondary education.

好像学校觉得用迂回战术更有效吧。我们反对原来的提案，然后再提新的提案，并且还要支持原来提案中我们支持的部分。

不知道这是妥协还是什么，鬼佬政治，我也越来越搞不懂了。。。

一句话，这次放你一马，给你个机会自己找钱。找不到？下次再来狠的。

从校长信上来看，很明显，学校还还不能说是保住了。但是对于UNB的情况来说，并还不是不乐观。

信上意思是说：
我们有很多的公众支持，大多群众支持UNBSJ的存在。但是，这并不就意味着政府会放弃合并学院的提议。政府在考虑他们自己的利益，也就是，说NB政府现在在探求一种方式能够“自己动手丰衣足食”。也就是说NB省需要自己的制造业，已经其他一系列的主要产业来支撑整个省的经济发展。这也是为什么有议员要求UNBSJ要求要建立更大的技工学校，让NB省能自产自足。

UNB校长的抉择无疑是正确的，为了解决这个问题，光反对是不行的。为了让政府的这些议员闭嘴，唯一两全的办法，就是。UNB将争取担任NB省self-sufficiency的领导角色。这样一来，政府的目的达到了，UNBSJ也保住了。所以，这个艰巨和光荣的任务，就落到了UNB全体师生的肩上。我们以后的任务将更重了，同时，UNB校长也在光邀社会各界人士来为UNB出力，所谓的出力，并不是简单的帮忙喊喊反对。而是要做实事让政府看。

让政府看到，如果UNBSJ跨台了，NB省的经济将受到巨大影响。同时校长也任命了学校专门教授成立了几个小组，专门负责具体实施各种事宜。包括和省政府议员的谈判。

说不定坏事变好事，大家等着看吧。

现在nb省啥最牛b，不是mccain的薯条，不是irving的家族企业，更不是那些自然资源。是啥？是[SIZE="7"]电[/SIZE]
现在电的出口已经是出口额最大的一块，也是省里赚税收最大的产业之一。省里想把sj建成nb的power hub，所以才需要更多的技工，而不是什么bba，cs之类的人才。

虽然我不是学BBA的，也不是学CS的，我不懂，NB到底学要什么人。
但是，一旦UNB在NB的经济发展中取得了LEADER的地位。那么NB经济就会一发而牵动全身，并不是单一的电力部门。随之而还一系列的经济连锁反应都会出现。
看电力为主的负产业也会随之兴起，这个时候，很难说除了技工之外，就不需要别的人。

很有见地啊！如果学校能够在NB省的经济发展中起到主导的作用的话，我们也很该为学校和我们自己欣慰了。只是想悄悄的问一句：咱学校有这个实力不？

UNB如果没有这个实力的话，可能NB省就找不出学校能有这个实力了。正是由于政府担心UNB没有这个实力，所以要准备着手组建专门的职业培训学校以满足经济发展的需要。但是如果UNB能够担当这个位置的话，那么UNBSJ的合并就显得没有什么意义了。

况且，UNB担当LEADER的话，绝对比那些什么community college 要强很多。community college 只能满足技工的需要，如果政府把眼光放长远点，应该要看到，在NB经济腾飞后，是需要各方面的人才的。不光是技术工人这单一的人才就足够了。 能满足这样长期而全面的人才需求的，[FONT="黑体"][B]只有UNB能够担此重任[/B]。[/FONT]

制造业的下滑不仅是NB的问题，整个加拿大都面临着同样的问题。而加拿大潜在的最大竞争对手就是中国。（不仅是这样，美国，日本的制造业同样受中国工业的发展的影响）。
不过政府还是不想放弃对制造业的扶持，早在今年2月就有联邦国会议员提出要用100亿加币来重振加拿大制造业。NB政府合并UNBSJ其中的目的也是想挽回制造业尴尬的局面。

目前，製造业面临著能源价格上涨、[B][U][COLOR="Red"]技术工人短缺[/COLOR][/U][/B]、来自中国及其他廉价製造业者的竞爭，另外，加幣的上涨也使本国的出口不具竞爭力。这些因素影响了加拿大17%的经济及210万加拿大人的工作职位。

现在唯一两全其美的办法，就是UNB来充当制造业LEADER的地位。这样，学校也保住了，政府也没得说了。

校长原话：“We are now engaged in a productive and respectful dialogue with stakeholders to determine [COLOR="DarkOrange"]how UNB can play a lead role[/COLOR] in the government's quest for self-sufficiency."

觉得和旧中国大炼钢的口号很像。
看来你也关注时事，你也该知道制造业在nb，甚至加拿大，都只占GDP的很小很小一部分。

NB省制造业在2006年，只有36900人工作。相反，在goods producing industry， such as trade, health care, finance, transportation，有77000工作。再者，service producing industries就更多人了，工278，000人在这个sector工作。

第三产业才是发展最快的产业，也需要最多的人，所以开设技工学校是必要的。


“UNB在NB的经济发展中取得了LEADER的地位”，不明白你什么意思。如果你是说教育产业，我要告诉你，educational services在nb 的gdp里只占很小一部分，是不可能领导省里的经济的。如你的意思是说教育在省里发展的重要性，我个人觉得一个大学和一个省的经济发展没特别大的联系，大学毕业生没有college毕业的skilled work对劳动力市场来的更实际。

再来说NB省，并不是什么行业就业人多，什么行业对NB省带来的经济效益就最大。NB省最强的，前面已经说了是能源，第二就是机械。
这里有NB政府的官方数据表格，2000年到2006年的统计。从数据可以看出，制造业确实有下滑趋势。不过还是NB省的第二大重要经济来源。
